female directors raise in Cinema Verite

The Cinema Verite, Iran's International Film Festival, has had a four percent raise in Women directors' presence.

A total of 634 films have been submitted to the 12th edition of the festival, 89 of which have been directed by female artists.

This indicates a four percents growth in women directors' attending this cinematic event compared to the previous edition.

Title of the officially selected films will be announced early November.

The following edition of the event will hold different sections, including national competition, international competition, Shahid Avini Award and professional workshops.

The international section comprises three categories of short, mid-length and feature documentaries.

The national section includes two categories of short (less than 45 minutes) and feature documentaries (more than 45 minutes).

The Shahid Avini Award is dedicated to documentary films related to the sacrifices, selflessness and resistance of the Iranian people during Iraq-Iran war in 1980s.

All documentaries in all lengths, formats, and subjects produced between 2014 and 2016 are eligible to participate in the Special, Tribute, Retrospective and Panorama sections which are all non-competitive.

Organized by the Documentary and Experimental Film Center, the first edition of the Cinema Verite was held in 2007.

Over the past decade it has emerged as one of the most important events on Iran's documentary film calendar.

The Cinema Verite aims at protection of the nation's identity, promoting creative documentary, reinforcing the link between documentary cinema and social facts and events, introducing new global developments in documentary cinema, providing financial support for documentarians by distributing and screening their works in other festivals and removing hurdles to film production.

The 12th edition of the Cinema Verite is slated for December 9-16, 2018, in Tehran.
